Passage #3

   "There were no prayers at his grave.  No candles were lit to his memory.  His last word was my name.  A summons, to which i did not respond.  But I had no more tears. And, in the depths of my being, in the recesses of my weakened conscience, could I have searched it, I might perhaps have found something like-free at last!"

 

Summary

This passage is talking about how once his father had died and no one cared.  It was just another death.  His father had died saying Elie's name and Elie couldn’t do anything about it.  Once Elie knew he was dead he was almost happy.  In the book it was described as "free at last."   Elie felt relived that his father was gone but at the same time he was sad but could no longer feal pain.  After all he had been through loosing his father felt like nothing.   

 

Point of View

The point of view in this passage is extremely important.  The first person point of view helps develop the relationship between the son and his father.  It helps you know how important that father was to his son and after all he has experienced how he can’t cry or feel bad.  It helps you relate to Elie and see how all the pain and suffering he has experianced is finaly getting to him.
